Hesti Farida Al Bastari. 2011. Descriptive Study About The Intergroup Relations between Dayak and Maduranese in Kalimantan Timur.

The background of this research is the intergroup conflict between Dayak and Maduranese ethnic group in West and Central Kalimantan occurred 1996-2001, and the occurrence of intergroup conflict potential in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, which was a fight between two individuals Dayak and Maduranese in 2005. This research aimed to get the description about how the intergroup relations of Dayak and Maduranese in East Kalimantan could be involved in preventing the intergroup ethnic conflict in the province.

This research uses qualitative method, by using primary data from questionnaires, interviews, and observations to five Dayaks and eight Maduranese in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, and secondary data from previous researches, mass media and literatures.The interview guide uses the concept of Intergroup Relations from Smith and Bond (1998) as theoretical frame, that connect the occurrence of intergroup conflict with discrimination, prejudice, stereotyping, and social identity within the members of the groups involved.

The result of this research shows that when the potential conflict occurs in East Kalimantan, the people from each ethnic group have strong social identity, prejudice and discrimination were formed, but did not formed the intergroup conflict between the two ethnic groups. Dayak and Maduranese people in East Kalimantan have a neighborhood and community relationship, so that when the intergroup ethnic conflict occurred, they considered outgroups involved in the conflict were different with the Dayak or Maduranese people that they known already. There were existed the roles of significant figures such as public figures and cultural representatives in avoiding the intergroup ethnic conflict in East Kalimantan.
